Renewing Items

To renew a book charged to your account, click in the box to the left of its title.  When you have clicked boxes for all the books you wish to renew, click on the Renew button at the bottom of the list.   When your request has been processed, the system will return to the top of your account information screen.  You then can scroll down your list of items  to make certain all items have been renewed.  You should always perform this check since some items may not be eligible for renewal.

A self-renewal cannot be performed if:

The item is being recalled/held for another patron
Your account is restricted for some reason
The item has already been renewed twice from a remote location.

In the last case, simply bring the book to the  Circulation Desk and staff will renew the item and reset the cycle so it can be renewed remotely two more times.   If you can't determine why you can't renew a book, please check with the Circulation Desk.

GALILEO Password

GALILEO is an electronic library service offered by the University System of Georgia.  When connecting from off campus, full access to some of GALILEO's components (licensed, commercial databases), is limited to currently enrolled students, faculty, staff, and registered public library patrons.

Darton College faculty, staff, and students may obtain a password for off-campus access to GALILEO from GIL by following the steps below. Georgia citizens not affiliated with Darton College should contact their local library for access information.

To get the GALILEO password (available only to Currently Enrolled/Employed Darton students, faculty and staff) just click on the Request button at the top of the screen.  Unless you have already signed on to Your Account, the system will request your barcode/library account number (or you can choose Social Security Number) and last name.  You must then choose GALILEO Password from the drop-down list and click . The password changes every semester.

Placing a Hold

If you see a book on GIL that you want, but it is charged out to another user, click on the Request button at the top of the screen.  Unless you have already signed on to Your Account, the system will request your barcode/library account number (or you can choose Social Security Number) and last name.  You must then choose HOLD from the drop-down list. Next, enter your barcode number/Social Security Number a second time on the form.  In a box at the bottom you can specify how long your hold request will remain in the system.
GIL will only place a hold on a book that is charged out.  If the status of a book is "on hold" (meaning it is being held for another patron to pick up) the system will reject your hold.  If  you go to the Circulation Desk, staff will place a hold on such items for you.

For offline hold options, see placing a hold.

Placing a Recall

If you see a book on GIL that you want, but it is charged out to another user, click on the Request button at the top of the screen.  Unless you have already signed on to Your Account, the system will request your barcode/library account number (or you can choose Social Security Number) and last name.  You must then choose RECALL from the drop-down list. Next, enter your barcode number/Social Security Number a second time on the form.  In a box at the bottom you can specify how long your recall request will remain in the system.
GIL will only place a recall on a book that is charged out.  If the status of a book is "on hold" (meaning it is being held for another patron to pick up) the system will reject your recall.  If  you go to the Circulation Desk, staff will place a recall on such items for you.

For offline recall options, see Recalling Items.
