What can I do with an English degree?
Majoring in English can prepare you for a variety of careers. Written communication skills are needed in just about any job. More realistically, English majors become teachers or professors of English. Some, after finishing the B.A., enroll in law school. Other career options for English majors are business, especially if they decide to double major in English and business. Communication skills and the study of humanities provide a useful foundation for just about any career.
What teaching options are available?
English majors are employed in secondary and post-secondary education. In post-secondary education, you can choose to teach at a two-year institution (which emphasizes teaching), a four-year institution (some emphasize teaching more than research), or an institution that offers graduate degrees. These graduate degrees include the M.A. in English, the M.F.A. in Creative Writing, or the Ph.D. in English. These graduate degrees have specializations, such as Irish Studies, Poetry Writing, or Composition and Rhetoric. A field exists in your area of interest, though generally it is advisable to take graduate coursework in Composition Studies or Rhetoric to improve your chances of obtaining a teaching job. Be aware also that a very narrow field of specialization can limit your chances of finding employment. For example, only so many job openings exist for scholars of Medieval Studies. To obtain one overview of the job market, read, for example, The Chronicle of Higher Education, which is available also online. This “trade publication” is read widely by persons in the academy, both for its coverage of the profession and for its job ads.
